When the system fails patients, we take action. Our court case against the Gauteng Department of Health challenged serious breakdowns in cancer services and demanded accountability. This case stands up for patients’ rights and sends a clear message that delays and neglect are not acceptable.

Gauteng Health Department Case
We know the facts, we need accountability and justice.
After years of engagement to address failures in cancer services at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Cancer Alliance took legal action against the Gauteng Department of Health.
In 2022, we presented evidence of serious oncology failures and patient harm. Despite temporary interventions, task team negotiations, and engagement with Treasury, no sustainable solution followed. In March 2024, R250 million in cancer funding was returned unspent while patients waited for care. With all other avenues exhausted, we turned to the courts to enforce the constitutional right to timely, life-saving cancer treatment.
