Information on cancer for patients and families

This page is provided as a single point of entry to the many kinds of support available to cancer patients in South Africa. Here we provide direct access to some useful information, as well as links to other sites which provide more information and more detail on specific aspects or specific cancers.

Patient Support is provided directly to patients by our many members as well as others, while the Cancer Alliance works on advocacy and access issues in conjunction with and on behalf of all our members and all patients.

SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL CANCER CAMPAIGN

Our initial thrust will be to provide information to directly support the National Cancer Campaign, initiated in early 2018 following the declaration by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered on 16th February 2018 as follows

We will also need to confront lifestyles diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancers and cardiovascular diseases. In the next three months we will launch a huge cancer campaign similar to the HIV counselling and testing campaign. This will also involve the private sector as we need to mobilise all resources to fight this disease

PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA, SONA, 16TH FEBRUARY 2018

The Cancer Alliance welcomes the Presidential support as announced in the SONA and hopes that this will be the start of a new chapter in the story of cancer services in South Africa. The Cancer Alliance remains committed to advocate for the needs of cancer patients and their families across South Africa to ensure improved access to quality cancer care services for all. We are more than willing to collaborate and play a part in seeking solutions to ensure efficacy in planning and establishing cancer services that will benefit all cancer patients across South Africa. We will support the National Cancer Campaign in every possible way. The Cancer Alliance values the relationship between Health NGOs and Government and is committed to support all efforts to ensure improvement to health care delivery in South Africa.

The National Cancer Campaign will be formally launched on 30th October 2018 in Pietermartizburg, KwaZulu-Natal. During the first year the focus will be primarily on:

  1. General Awareness: To inform the public about cancer, with specific focus on Breast (Female and Male), Cervical, Colorectal, Prostate and Childhood Cancers.
  2. Screening and Testing: Screening and testing campaigns will be launched around the country, concentrating specifically on Breast (Female and Male), Cervical, Colorectal and Prostate cancers.
