Who we are
Who

The Cancer Alliance is a collective group of cancer control non-profit organisations and cancer advocates brought together under a common mandate, to provide a platform of collaboration for cancer civil society to speak with one voice and be a powerful tool to affect change for all South African adults and children affected by cancer.

LET’S TALK ABOUT CANCER
SO WHY
As a unified collective, we’re raising our voices as one:
CANCER MUST BECOME A PRIORITY IN SOUTH AFRICA!
We can no longer afford to stay stuck in stigmatised silence about this illness that destroys the lives of too many.
We need to talk about cancer in a way that DEMYSTIFIES STIGMA and TERMINATES TABOOS.
We need to talk about the fragmented & overloaded public health sector that neglects cancer patients’ needs.
We need to talk about the excruciating REALITY of cancer’s emotional & psycho-social IMPACT.
We need to talk about the LACK of emotional support services for cancer patients.
We need to talk about the TRANSPORT PROBLEMS our public sector patients have – especially in rural areas.
We need to talk about having cancer services located nearer to the patients’ homes.
We need CANCER SERVICES that work.
We need CANCER TREATMENT EQUIPMENT that works.
We need cancer treatment EQUITY across South Africa.
We need to talk about how patients are not receiving patient-centered treatment.
We need to have BETTER ACCESS to EARLY detection & treatment to avoid LATE diagnosis.
We need to talk about a BIGGER BUDGET for cancer services to make sure that we have equitable treatment.
We need to talk about AFFORDABLE treatment options.
We need to talk about healthcare professionals receiving appropriate training to deal EFFECTIVELY with cancer.
As cancer NGOs and independent advocates standing together – united within the CANCER ALLIANCE – we no longer speak separately.
We are now talking as a unified collective – and we’re all saying the same thing:
WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER IN THIS FIGHT AGAINST CANCER!
We want to make sure everybody knows: cancer is an illness that CAN be treated if it is DETECTED EARLY!
And you CAN live a good, healthy life – despite your cancer – for a long time if you find help sooner rather than later.
BREAK THE SILENCE | STAND UP | SPEAK UP
INSIST ON CHANGE NOW
LET’S TALK ABOUT CANCER – TOGETHER!

HOW
Management
The Cancer Alliance is managed by the Executive Committee (EXCO), which is elected by and drawn from our member organizations. All EXCO members contribute their time and effort on a voluntary basis, and are supported by their own organizations where necessary.
Cancer Alliance Members pay an annual membership fee which is used for minimal day to day expenses.
Funding
The Cancer Alliance does not compete with its own members in fund raising. Our projects are funded by grants and donations made by organizations, usually to support a specific objective of the Cancer Alliance.
Objectives
The objectives of the Cancer Alliance are expressed in our Strategic Plan for 2018 as:
- Ensure that cancer becomes a national priority
- Promote surveillance and research
- Improve services for cancer prevention and control
- Strengthen human resources for cancer interventions throughout the healthcare system
- Strengthen technology, equipment, vaccines, medicine and infrastructure for cancer
- Reduce stigma and discrimination for cancer patients and survivors
- Increase engagement within the cancer community.
