CANCER ALLIANCE PUBLISHES SECTION 4 OF THE ADVOCACY TOOLKIT ON THE NEW BREAST CANCER POLICY: TREATMENT & PALLIATIVE CARE

Breast Cancer Control Policy 2017

25th February 2019

Helping handsThe Cancer Alliance today publishes the fourth and final part of its series on the Breast Cancer Control Policy with Section 4: Treatment & Palliative Care

South Africa’s new Breast Cancer Control Policy is a vital document aimed at prioritising breast cancer awareness, prevention, treatment and care in South Africa. Once fully implemented, it will secure access to a network of dedicated regional breast units that will not only improve early detection rates, but also establish guidelines for optimal treatment and palliative care to help drive down death rates from this cancer, which has become a leading cause of death of South African women.

Breast cancer management relies on a firm foundation of a multidisciplinary team. The “core” team comprises a surgeon, pathologist, radiologist, medical oncologist and a radiation oncologist. The intention is that from the start of a patient’s treatment there is an individual plan, tailored to the exact stage and type of breast cancer that the patient has. – The Breast Health Foundation

Section 4 covers the main ways in which breast cancer should be treated; the timeframes under which treatment should be provided; the proposed Specialised Breast Units; treatment follow-up and psychological support; as well as palliative care. The introduction of the new Nurse and Patient Navigators (NPNs) is also discussed.

Readers are invited to download the Social Media Package, which contains copies of all the graphics for use on social media, the planned publication schedule, and details of how to post each meme.
