CANCER ALLIANCE PUBLISHES THE FIRST SECTION OF THE ADVOCACY TOOLKIT ON THE NEW BREAST CANCER POLICY: THE NEW POLICY

Breast Cancer Prevention and Control Policy 2017

The Cancer Alliance today publishes the first in a new series on the Breast Cancer Prevention and Control Policy 2017.

South Africa’s new Breast Cancer Prevention and Control Policy is a vital document aimed at prioritising breast cancer awareness, prevention, treatment and care in South Africa. Once fully implemented, it will secure access to a network of dedicated regional breast units that will not only improve early detection rates, but also establish guidelines for optimal treatment and palliative care to help drive down death rates from this cancer, which has become a leading cause of death of South African women.

In this first section we cover why the new policy is so important for South African women (and men); a brief look at the risks and typical symptoms of breast cancer; the three interdependent strategies and the creation of new Regional- and Specialised Breast Units (RBUs and SBUs); and some information on the first five SBUs to be created.

We also introduce a new strategy for publicising this series, and our first venture into providing materials in South African languages other than English.

Cancer Alliance Members are requested to download the new Social Media Package, which contains copies of all the graphics for use on social media, the planned publication schedule, and details of how to post each meme. QR codes to access the new sound files are also provided.
